A Historic Event Venue Made For Social Gatherings
Long before The Hawthorn hosted clinking glasses, lively toasts, and unforgettable nights, it was part of the iconic Frank Jones Brewery, once one of the largest ale producers in the country. Back in the late 1800s, this vibrant complex powered Portsmouth’s economy, spanning over 10 acres and employing hundreds. Our building, known then as the Scald House, played a gritty but vital role: it was where oak barrels were sterilized with scorching-hot stones to keep the brewery’s famous ale pure. Today, that same space, once defined by heat and hard work, now brings people together for warmth of a different kind: connection, celebration, and moments worth remembering. Today, the heat and steam have been replaced by warmth of another kind. The Scald House has been reimagined as The Hawthorn, a space that honors its past while welcoming a new era of gathering. The original architecture remains and the brick walls whisper stories of grit, craftsmanship, and community. Where workers once prepared barrels for ale bound across the country, we now host milestone moments such as parties, birthdays, Bar and Bat Mitzvah’s, and celebrations of life.
